Under ControlLead: Live Oak Plantation’s 5-year-old Brazilian-bred gelding Under Control won a thriller in the eighth race turf allowance Saturday at Gulfstream Park with leading jockey Javier Castellano in the saddle for trainer Graham Motion in a four-horse photo-finish. The first seven horses were separated by only a length, and the winner had to survive a foul claim to keep the victory.

Under Control raced in sixth down the backstretch in the well-matched field of 10 going 1 1/16 miles on turf before swinging out to rally for a hard-fought nose score over Robert Harvey's veteran turf stakes performer Hollinger. Ashbrook Farm’s Southern Parkway rallied from last early to finish third under Julien Leparoux, just a head short of catching the runner-up.

A son of Northern Afleet, Under Control was making his second start back since mid-May at Pimlico when he finished third in a turf allowance race. Saturday’s win was his third in eight career starts with two seconds and a third as he paid $20.40 for $2 to win and was timed the distance in 1:40:72 over ‘firm’ turf.

Under Control had finished seventh over the course and distance on Feb. 23 in a similar race in his first start back from the layoff. “He was farther back and didn’t get a clear run,” said Castellano ofthe Feb. 23 race. “I think he needed that race and today the race unfolded perfectly for him.”

Jockey Joe Bravo, who rode Lael Stable’s 4-year-old Malibu Way to finish eighth, lodged a claim of foul against both the winner and runner-up, but the stewards took no action.

The victory was the second of the afternoon for Motion. He won the fifth race turf allowance feature with Andrew Stone’s 4-year-old English-bred filly Strathnaver in her American debut after racing in England the last two years.

Who’s Hot: Jockey Joel Rosario won three races Saturday to close the gap by one on defending Gulfstream meet titlist Javier Castellano. Rosario scored in the third on Cottontail ($3.60), Strathnaver ($9.40) in the fifth and Ju Ju Eyeballs ($10.20) in the sixth. With less than three weeks to go until the meet closes on Apr. 5. Castellano won two races Saturday with Under Control ($20.80) in the eighth and El Tuscano ($17.40) in the 11th race nightcap. He leads Rosario by five at 83-78.
