Gulfstream Today 3.20.2013
Lead: Richard Ravin’s 3-year-old Florida-bred gelding Rip Roarin Ritchie had the perfect trip under jockey John Velazquez Wednesday to win the eighth race turf allowance by a neck over stablemate Off the Page at Gulfstream Park. The first two finishers were trained by Wesley Ward. Off the Page is owned by Ken Ramsey.
Rip Roarin Ritchie stalked the pace along the inside, was steadied briefly in behind the leaders at the top of the stretch, but angled out and rallied to just get up at the wire over the pacesetters Party Lad and Off the Page.
A son of Bring the Heat, it was Rip Roarin Ritchie’s first start at Gulfstream and first start of the year after finishing fifth back in October at Laurel Park in the Laurel Futurity. Wednesday’s win was his third in five career starts with one third and a fifth as he paid $10.20 and was timed the distance in 54.97 over ‘firm’ turf.
“Everything worked out the way it was supposed to,” said trainer Wesley Ward. We’ve been working on coming from behind with Rip Roarin Ritchie because he sort of stopped in his last race. He settled nice. Unfortunately, my boss (Mr. Ramsey) lost, but we’ll get them next time with his.”
Rocco Takes off Mounts: Joe Rocco Jr. was unseated at the start of the sixth race when his mount, Success Rate, broke through the gate, hitting Rocco on the nose. Rocco took off his last four mounts but plans to return Thursday.
Who’s Hot: The jockeys and trainers spread the wealth on Wednesday’s card with ten different winners throughout the day.
