Gulfstream Today: 3.31.2013
Lead: Defending riding champ Javier Castellano returned Sunday to Gulfstream after winning the Louisiana Derby Saturday with Revolutionary and the Fair Grounds Oaks with Unlimited Budget. Castellano, who set a record with 112 victories at Gulfstream last year, appears to be on track to win his second consecutive riding title.
"This game is very competitive and you're always wanting to stay on top and not be second to anyone else," said Castellano Sunday afternoon. "I'm very pleased and blessed to have had the opportunity to ride Revolutionary in the Louisiana Derby. He did it the right way (Saturday) and I was very surprised the way he acted. Everything he does, he does the right way. I've been working him at Palm Meadows and he's been phenomenal."
When asked if the added distance of the Kentucky Derby might be a factor, Castellano responded: "I don't think the Derby distance will matter. He's a well-bred horse who proved himself at the 1 1/16 mile distance twice already, beating really nice horses on two different surfaces at Aqueduct and Louisiana. I think the farther the better."
Castellano called Unbridled Budget a "wonderful filly...she's really a phenomenal filly."
Who's Hot: Trainer's Peter Walder and Marcus Vitali won a pair of races Sunday. Walder combined with jockey Rajiv Maragh with Foxie Afleet in the second ($8) and Sonja's Angel ($4.20). Vitali took the first with Ainsley ($12.40) and the fourth Special Song ($4.40).
Rainbow 6 Carryover Wednesday Will Start at $1.787 Million: There was no unique ticket Sunday with all six winners of the 10-cent Rainbow 6, which means the carryover Wednesday when live racing returns will be $1,787,446.53. There was one live horse in the last race - Starship Income - but the 4-year-old filly was no factor. Those with six-of-six winners received a consolation of $3,932.32.
There is a mandatory payout of the 10-cent Rainbow 6 on Friday, March 5, Gulfstream's closing day of its winter meet. The Daily Racing Form will be available that day for only $5.
