Goodbye Sorrow Takes First 2-Year-Old Race of Year

Rainbow 6 Carryover Tops $5.2 Million

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - Goodbye Sorrow, bred, owned and trained by Wesley Ward and ridden by Jeffrey Sanchez, won the first 2-year-old race of Gulfstream Park's summer season Friday when she held off Jamie's Dancer to win a $48,000 maiden special event by a half length.

A Florida-bred daughter of Bring the Heat, Goodbye Sorrow covered the 4 1/2 furlongs in :53.15.

"She's a very nice horse," Sanchez said. "She's going to get better, too."

Gulfstream's spring and summer season of racing will feature a number of 2-year-old races leading up to the $1.4 million Florida Sire Stakes. The six-race Sire Stakes program, for juveniles sired by nominated Florida Stallions, kicks off Aug. 9 with the $100,000 Dr. Fager and $100,000 Desert Vixen for fillies, both at six furlongs. Juveniles compete at seven furlongs Sept. 6 before the series concludes Oct. 4 with the $350,000 In Reality and the $350,000 My Dear Girl for fillies.

The Florida Sire Stakes, formerly the Florida Stallion Stakes, has a rich history dating back to 1982 when it was created by Ocala breeder and owner Dan Lasater. The six-race series has produced six Eclipse Award winners: Awesome Feather, the 2010 Juvenile Filly champion; Big Drama, the 2010 Sprint Champion; Holy Bull, the 1994 Horse of the Year and 3-year-old champion; Smile, the 1986 Sprint champion; Brave Raj, the 1986 Juvenile Filly champion; Not Surprising, the 1995 Sprint champion.
