Hey Leroy Provides Consolation for Connections
All wasn't lost Saturday for the connections of Social Inclusion, who were forced to scratch its 3-year-old colt from the $75,000 Sir Bear when he bruised his hoof in the morning. Hey Leroy, winner of Gulfstream's Appleton (G3) Florida Derby Day, split horses down the stretch to win an allowance optional claiming event by 1 3/4 lengths over Bad Debt. Tropical Turf Handicap (G3) winner Philly Ace finished third.
Hey Leroy, a gelded son of Any Given Saturday owned by Rontos Racing Stable Corp, trained by Manny Azpurua and ridden by Elvis Trujillo, covered a firm 1 1/16 mile turf course in 1:40.62. The gelding had previously suffered a terrible trip when finishing 10th in the Miami Mile (G3).
Who's Hot: Jockey Edgard Zayas rode three winners Saturday. He won the fourth with Whiskey Tap ($7.80), the Sir Bear with C. Zee ($14.20) in the ninth, and Skarabajo ($12.20) in the 10th. Jockey Elvis Trujillo won two races with Z Maitre D ($9.60) in the fifth and Hey Leroy ($4.60) in the seventh.
