HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Wildcat Red pulled off a mild upset in Saturday’s fifth race, a $46,000 maiden special weight event for 2-year-olds, but the son of D’wildcat’s dazzling 8-length debut victory at Gulfstream Park didn’t come as a surprise to jockey Edgard Zayas.
“I’ve been working him for about a month and a half, and every time I work him he gets better and better and better. In the morning, he acts a little lazy, but every time I ask him he runs,” Gulfstream’s leading rider said.
Trained by Jose Garoffalo for the Honor Stable, Wildcat Red broke alertly and set the pace along the backstretch while pressed by Automatic Jax and Browns Gap. Leaving the turn into the homestretch, the 9-2 second choice sprinted clear of the competition and drew away to a decisive victory. The Florida-bred colt ran 6 ½ furlongs in 1:16.97 after setting fractions of :22.86, :46.03 and 1:10.56.
“Every time he felt a horse near him, he wouldn’t let him by,” Zayas said. “I knew he was going to run good, he’s been so good in the morning.”
In the third-race, Mon Arch Lass posted a front-running score by 3 ¾ lengths to graduate in her fourth lifetime start in the $35,000 maiden special weight race for fillies and mares. Trained by Marty Wolfson, the 3-year-old daughter of Arch was coupled in a Stonestreet Stable entry with Todd Pletcher-trained Island Love Song, which went to post as the 2-5 favorite. Mon Arch Lass, who was ridden by Jilver Chamafi, was stalked by Island Love Song throughout the seven-furlong sprint and had more than enough left in the stretch to easily hold off her entrymate.
Mon Arch Lass ran seven furlongs in 1:23.51 on fractions of :22.59, :45.82 and 1:10.32.
Who’s Hot: Jilver Champafi rode four winners on the card. In addition to Mon Arch Lass ($2.80), Chamafi visited the winner’s circle with Elisa Greeley ($18.60) in the fourth, Super Fantasy ($25.60 ) in the sixth and Black Diamond Cat in the $100,000 The Monbrook.
