Heiko Delivers Special Victory for Wolfson in $100,000 The Vid

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - When trainer Marty Wolfson noticed his former turf star The Vid would be honored with a stakes in his name on the Labor Day program at Gulfstream Park, he was determined to run a horse in the 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for 3-year-olds and up. Luckily, he had a horse that could not only run in the $100,000 The Vid but also make a serious run at winning the race.

And Heiko did just that with a front-running performance that produced a three-quarter length victory Monday under jockey Jilver Chamafi.

"I wanted this race bad," admitted Wolfson. "The Vid was a special horse. He won the Canadian twice and the Appleton twice. He was just a top turf horse. When I saw that (a race was being named for The Vid), I said, 'I have to run a horse.'"

Heiko ($15.20) entered Monday's race in winning form, although he was disqualified and placed second for interference after finishing first in a recent allowance race. Seeking his first stakes victory, the 4-year-old son of Mr. Greeley broke alertly and assumed an early lead, stalked but not pressed by No Lift Shift around the first turn and along the backstretch. After running comfortably during a half-mile in 49.94 seconds and six furlongs in 1:13.52, Chamafi had a fresh horse for the stretch drive and Heiko opened up by more than two lengths in mid-stretch. Backseat Memories, ridden by Jesus Rios, made a strong late bid but was unable to catch the winner. Ashtar, a 37-1 long shot ridden by Antonio Gallardo, finished four lengths farther back in third. Favored No Lift Shift was another neck back in fourth.

"Mr. Wolfson told me there wasn't much speed in the race and to go to the front," said Chamafi, who came off suspension for Heiko's recent DQ to make amends Monday. "I did and he finished running."

Heiko ran the 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:42.38 to become a stakes winner with his third career score in 19 starts.

"It was better than last time, when he got disqualified. He (Chamafi) let him open up a little more. Last time, he let him go head and head," Wolfson said. "He just let him alone on the lead, and they let him alone. He went 49 (seconds for the first half mile). I was shocked."

Heiko earned $60,000 for Silverton Hill LLC while bringing back so many pleasant memories of The Vid for Marty Wolfson.
