Joel Rosario Named Prime Jockey Award Winner
Jockey Joel Rosario was named the recipient Friday of the Prime Jockey Award by III Forks Prime Steakhouse and Cantina Laredo Modern Mexican.
The Prime Jockey Award is presented twice a month to a jockey who achieves high standards both on and off the track. Each recipient will receive a $100 gift certificate to III Forks Prime Steakhouse or Cantina Laredo Modern Mexican. Both popular restaurants are located at The Village at Gulfstream Park.
Dennis Labrador, proprietor of III Forks Prime Steakhouse, presented the certificate to Rosario following Friday’s sixth race.
Rosario rode 13 winners during the past two weeks, scoring his biggest stakes win of the meeting aboard Live Lively in the $250,000 Davona Dale (G2). Rosario, who visited the Gulfstream Park winner’s circle four times on Friday, March 1, has ridden the winners of six stakes thus far this season.
Rosario is riding fulltime at Gulfstream Park for the first time, having ridden on the Southern California circuit for the previous five years. The 24-year-old native of the Dominican Republic was the leading rider in his homeland before moving to the U.S. in 2006.
Rosario became the most dominant jockey on the So. California circuit. He captured three straight titles at Hollywood Park, back-to-back championships at Del Mar and was the top jockey at the 2012 Santa Anita spring meeting before moving on to the East Coast to ride in New York during the summer and fall and at Gulfstream this winter.
