Jonathan Gonzales Rides First Winner

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Apprentice jockey Jonathan Gonzales notched the first victory of his career Saturday at Gulfstream Park, rallying in the stretch aboard Si Senora for a three-quarter length victory in the third race.
The 21-year-old native of Peru had previously ridden seven mounts with three second-place finishes since launching his career at Gulfstream before earning a trip to the winner’s circle.
“I’ve been working hard. I’ve worked for four years for my first win, so I’m really happy,” said Gonzales, who moved to the U.S. six years ago.
Si Senora broke slowly before Gonzales sent along the inside to gain position behind the pacesetters on the turn into the stretch. The Luis Duco-trained 5-year-old mare was eased out for the stretch run and wore down favored pacesetter Fly Express to prevail in the five-furlong turf race.
Gonzales has prepared for his landmark day working at South Florida tracks.
“I’ve worked for a lot of trainers. I started as a groom, then I got to ride,” he said.
Gonzales plans to remain on the South Florida circuit.
