Keeneland Opens Friday With 15 In Alcibiades
LEXINGTON, KY (Oct. 4, 2011) – An overflow field of 15 2-year-old fillies passed the entry box Tuesday morning for Friday’s 60th running of the $400,000 Darley Alcibiades (G1) at 1 1/16 miles on the main track that will highlight the opening day of the 17-day Fall Meeting that runs through October 29.
The Darley Alcibiades, which goes as the ninth race on Friday’s 10-race card at 5:45 p.m. (ET), is a “Win and You’re In” race for the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) to be run November 4 at Churchill Downs. First post time Friday is 1:15 p.m.
The Darley Alcibiades is the first five of Grade 1 races to be held over FallStars Weekend, which features nine graded stakes and six “Win and You’re In” races for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
Three stakes winners, one of them with a graded score, top the field. Barry King’s Flashy Lassie won the Grade 3 Debutante at Churchill Downs in June for trainer Garry Simms. Kent Desormeaux, who was aboard for that victory, has the call on Flashy Lassie and will break from post position two.
Brereton Jones’ Tu Endie Wei is undefeated in two starts at Woodbine, both in stakes. Regular rider James McAleney has the assignment on Tu Endie Wei, who will break from post position four. Reade Baker is the trainer.
Stride Rite Racing Stable’s Frolic’s Revenge won the Lindsay Frolic in August at Calder Race Course and enters the Darley Alcibiades off a runner-up finish in the Brave Raj at Calder. Trained by Milton Wolfson, Frolic’s Revenge will be ridden by Juan Leyva and break from post 10.
The field for the Darley Alcibiades, from the inside out, is as follows: Putthebabiesdown (Alan Garcia), Flashy Lassie (Kent Desormeaux), Venetian Sonata (Jesus Castanon), Tu Endie Wei (James McAleney), Sweet Cat (John Velazquez), Egg Drop (Joe Talamo), Stephanie’s Kitten (Corey Lanerie), New Wave (Julien Leparoux), And Why Not (Garrett Gomez), Frolic’s Revenge (Juan Leyva), Heart of Destiny (Edgar Prado), Cheerleader (Jamie Theriot), Tavern On the Bay (David Mello) and Ann of the Dance (Rajiv Maragh). Also Eligible: On Fire Baby (Joe Johnson). All starters will carry 118 pounds.
