HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – As the 1000th victory of his career approached, Victor Lebron figured he could count on trainer Wayne Catalano to give him a leg up in reaching the important milestone.
The 26-year-old journeyman figured right.
Lebron scored win No. 1000 aboard Peach Bottom in the sixth race at Gulfstream Park Wednesday and joined Catalano in the winner’s circle for a celebration.
“I want to thank Wayne for putting me on my 1000th winner. I told him a long time ago, ‘When I got one more to go, I want you to be the one to put me on a winner.’ And he did,” said Lebron, who had ridden Peach Bottom to victory at Gulfstream on Feb. 2.
Lebron, who began galloping horses at a small track on the Virgin Islands at 14, rode his first winner at Thistledown in 2005. He traveled to Turfway Park on Sunday to record win 999 aboard Michael Maker-trained St. Ivan.
“I feel very proud to have my 1000th winner here at Gulfstream,” Lebron said. “I think I have a many more to come, hopefully, with the help of God.”
Lebron got away from the starting gate cleanly aboard Peach Bottom and gained good stalking position before making the lead on the final turn. Win No. 1000 was no longer in doubt through the stretch run as Peach Bottom drew away to victory by 3 ¾ lengths.
“At the gate, I got a little anxious,” he said. “After we broke, I said, ‘This is it.” I put him in a good spot and he went on to win.”
