Pomeroys Pistol Fires Best Shot in Sugar Swirl

By Ed Gray

Pomeroys Pistol was challenged by seven talented fillies and mares Saturday at Gulfstream Park, but the most daunting test facing the 4-5 favorite in the $100,000 Sugar Swirl (G3) was her post position.
Owner, breeder and trainer Amy Tarrant's concern about her 3-year-old filly's rail post position in the six-furlong sprint quickly dissipated with a stellar two-length victory.

Tarrant Hoping Good Year Gets Better in Sugar Swirl

By Brian Skirka

It’s been quite a ride for trainer Amy Tarrant and her 3-year-old filly Pomeroys Pistol over the past 12 months.

The daughter of Pomeroy began her 2011 year on Jan. 5 at Gulfstream Park – just a maiden win to her name – by finishing second in the Old Hat (G3) at odds of 34-1. Nearly 10 months to the day later, Pomeroys Pistol crossed the wire fourth, beaten just 3 ¾ lengths as the 6-1 third choice in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1).
