Another Good one for Byrne in Take Charge indy

By Leona Velazquez

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - Trainer Pat Byrne is no stranger to good horses or the national spotlight.
In 1997, the affable native of England conditioned Breeders’ Cup-winning juveniles Countess Diana and Favorite Trick, who would become the first 2-year-old since Secretariat to earn Horse of the Year honors. The following year, Byrne saddled Awesome Again to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).
Byrne is back in the spotlight in Saturday’s $1 million Florida Derby (G1) with Chuck and Maribeth Sandford’s Take Charge Indy. A victory in the 1 1/8-mile event would be his first stakes victory since Sorcerer’s Stone won the 2005 Arlington-Washington Futurity (G3).
