Parranda Much The Best in $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Parranda continued her dominance of the Gulfstream Park turf Saturday by convincingly winning the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf over E B Ryder and Nicki Starshine. The five-year-old mare by English Channel out of Dynamic Feature crossed the wire three lengths the victor, stopping the clock in 1:47.94 and paying $7.60 to win.

The favored Wishing Gate, coming off a start in the Matriarch (G1) at Hollywood Park, wasn’t a factor and finished fifth.

Owned by the Lone Stable, LLC, Parranda sat just off the leaders, relaxing while tucked in at the rail for much of the race. Then jockey Jose Lezcano moved her to the outside, and the mare made a bold, four-wide move and took the lead at the top of the stretch. From there, she drew off, and the win was never in question.

“I had a very good trip,” Lezcano said. “She broke perfect, like never before. I let her sit and relax in fourth and at the half-mile I let her move a little early because I didn’t want to leave her too much to do. When I really asked her, she just took off and won the race.”

Trainer Rodolfo Garcia had high praise for Lezcano, saying the jockey did a great job adjusting to the mare’s relatively new preferred running style.

“She finished great,” Garcia said. “As of late, she wants to be closer. She used to [come from] way off the pace. She likes to be on the outside. He (Lezcano) waited until he could go to the outside, and from there I knew she was going to close like she did. We got an A-effort ride, and a perfect win.”

“It was excellent,” he added. “He did everything right.”

Five of Parranda’s seven lifetime wins have come over Gulfstream’s grass. She is just two for nine everywhere else. So it’s no surprise that when asked about his plans for the mare going forward, Garcia had Gulfstream on the agenda.

“We going to consider our options,” he said. “We have a couple races here at Gulfstream and we’ll consider them. We’ll give her four or five week’s rest before we go into the next one.”
