Plum Pretty takes on small field in Apple Blossom
by Nicole Russo
Plum Pretty, winner of the 2011 Kentucky Oaks (G1), will look to display the form that placed her among the best in her division last year when she makes her 2012 debut against a compact field in the $500,000 Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) on Friday at Oaklawn Park.
The Apple Blossom was expected to feature reigning Horse of the Year Havre de Grace. However, the race’s defending champion was withdrawn from consideration over the weekend after receiving what owner Rick Porter and trainer Larry Jones deemed an unfair weight assignment at 123 pounds. Favoritism—and the high weight at 117 pounds—for the 1 1/16-mile race thus fell to Plum Pretty, who ships in from California for trainer Bob Baffert to take on a trio of runners with stakes wins on the Oaklawn Park track.
