HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – R Free Roll got off on the right foot in Saturday’s $75,000 Hollywood Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park and rolled to a dominating triumph in the six-furlong sprint for fillies and mares.
After going winless in four starts during Gulfstream’s Champions Meet, Richard Averill’s homebred 4-year-old broke alertly under Paco Lopez and the free-running filly was never threatened while posting a front-running three-length victory.
“We’ve been waiting for her to get a clean break the whole meet. When she breaks, she’s tough to beat,” Averill said. “It seemed like we always broke a step slow. When she broke going six furlongs, I pretty much knew she’d win.”
The daughter of Rockport Harbor, who was the 7-5 favorite in a field of 10 fillies and mares, had been stakes-placed in three of her last four starts.
“We needed something to build her confidence on,” Averill said. “Now we’ll move on to bigger and better things.”
R Free Roll, trained by Ralph Ziadie, ran six furlongs in 1:09.54. Pixie Devil, who chased the pace along the inside under Edgard Zayas, held second, 4 ¼ lengths ahead of Salamera, who stalked the early pace under Carlos Olivero.
R Free Roll collected $60,000, including a $15,000 Florida owner’s award, for her third career stakes victory.
“I had her mother. I bred her. She’s what makes this game fun,” Averill said. “Her mother was a multiple-stakes winner on grass. She won a stake here on the grass. She was a five-furlong turf horse. We’re going to eventually try R Free Roll on the grass, but all the money’s on the dirt, so, for now, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.”
