Sarah Wiener Wins Gulfstream Park/XpressBet Contest
SARAH WIENER WINS GULFSTREAM PARK/XPRESSBET CONTEST
Sarah Wiener of Clearwater, Fla. used her final $5 win/place wager of Gulfstream Park’s $400 Handicapping Contest to sweep past the field and catapult herself to Las Vegas for the DRF/NTRA National Handicapping Championship (NHC) on Jan. 27-28.
In the middle of the pack heading into the Sunday finale at Gulfstream, Wiener placed her final contest wager on 24-1 longshot Gambaru who rallied up the rail to win beneath jockey Jose Ferrer.
The score helped Wiener best her 94 competitors and secure the $7,600 first prize as well as the trip to Vegas and seat in the NHC.
Michael Berry, Sarah’s husband Brett Wiener, and Karen Mercado completed the top four in the contest which sends the top three finishers to Vegas. Since Brett Wiener has already qualified for the NHC, Mercado’s fourth-place finish was good enough to send her westbound.
The $400 Gulfstream Park/XpressBet Handicapping Contest was a two-day event held on Dec. 10-11 featuring 95 of the country’s best handicappers. Players had to make exactly 10 $5 win/place bets both days on races from Gulfstream Park, Aqueduct and Parx.
