Secret Circle looks to complete sweep in Arkansas Derby
by Frank Angst
After posting victories in two prep races for the $1-million Arkansas Derby (G1), Secret Circle will try to complete the Oaklawn Park sweep of three-year-old graded stakes in the main event on Saturday.
While Secret Circle posted victories in a division of the Southwest Stakes (G3) and in the Rebel Stakes (G2), he has not scared many challengers away. The opportunity at a large purse and crucial graded stakes earnings to help secure a starting spot in the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (G1) has helped attract a field of 11 three-year-olds for Saturday’s 1 1/8-mile race.
Trainer Bob Baffert holds two big pieces of the puzzle as the Racing Hall of Fame trainer not only will saddle Karl Watson’s, Michael Pegram’s, and Paul Weitman’s Secret Circle but also Bodemeister, who will break from the outside post after finishing second to Creative Cause in the San Felipe Stakes (G2) on March 10 at Santa Anita Park. Regular rider Rafael Bejarano will guide Secret Circle, by Eddington.
