Uncle Mo To Return March 12 At Gulfstream In Timely Writer
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Undefeated Kentucky Derby (G1) favorite and Eclipse Award champion Uncle Mo will make his much-anticipated, 3-year-old debut March 12 at Gulfstream Park in the $100,000 Timely Writer, owner Mike Repole announced today.
The Timely Writer, which carries no conditions, is open to all 3-year-olds and will be run at a one-turn mile. Todd Pletcher, who has been training Uncle Mo at Gulfstream’s satellite training facility, Palm Meadows, was also considering the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) on the same day as the Timely Writer for the colt’s 3-year-old debut.
“The Gulfstream Park surface is very similar to the surface that Mo’s training on every day at Palm Meadows,” Pletcher said. “There’s also the advantage of a 20 minute van ride to Gulfstream as opposed to a four-hour ride to Tampa Bay. Mo’s been training exceptionally well since his return and I am very confident and comfortable with either the Timely Writer or the Tampa Bay Derby.”
Said Repole: “Our number one goal and focus is to do what’s best for Uncle Mo; to have a very healthy and successful 3-year-old campaign. Mo has more than enough graded earnings to qualify for the (Kentucky) Derby on May 7. In racing, there’s no one’s opinion I trust more than Todd Pletcher. Just knowing how excited he is about the way Mo’s training is very encouraging. With the race more than two and a half weeks away, hopefully, this will give Mo’s fans ample time to make arrangements to watch his 3-year-old debut.”
Uncle Mo began his career convincingly Aug. 28 at Saratoga when he won his debut by 14 ¼ lengths. He returned six weeks later at Belmont Park to win the Champagne (G1) by 4 ¾ lengths before sealing his juvenile championship with a victory Nov. 6 in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Churchill Downs.
Uncle Mo has become one of the country’s most popular Derby contenders, with nearly 3,000 friends on his Facebook page and more than 400 followers on his Twitter page.
