Haras Santa Maria de Araras’ 7-year-old Kentucky homebred Simmard kept digging in after taking the lead in the final turn of Sunday’s $150,000 Mac Diarmida Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park, and held on for a game nose victory over James Karp’s 2-to-1 favorite Newsdad in the 1 3/8 miles turf test.
Peras International’s Yara went into Saturday’s $250,000 Davona Dale Stakes at Gulfstream Park unheralded after winning two of five starts in sprints, the first four at Calder last year. Trick or Treat International’s Here to Win, trained by Kiaran McLaughlin and ridden perfectly by jockey Joe Bravo, held off the multiple-stakes winner Keertana down the stretch to win the $100,000 The Very One (G3) by a length. Woodford Belle was third while Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) winner Perfect Shirl checked in eighth.
