Union Rags Schools for Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Chadds Ford Stable’s Union Rags, one of the early favorites for the Kentucky Derby (G1), schooled in Gulfstream Park’s walking ring Thursday in preparation for the Feb. 26 Fountain of Youth (G2).
While trainer Michael Matz looked on, the Champagne (G1) winner and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) runner-up schooled during the second race after being vanned from Palm Meadows, Gulfstream’s satellite training facility and the winter home of five of the last six Kentucky Derby winners, including the Matz-trained Barbaro.
“Everything has gone about as good as it could so far,” Matz said. “From the time he spent at Skara Glen Farm in Wellington until he came back to us at Palm Meadows, he hasn’t missed a beat. Every workout has gone on schedule.”
Matz said Union Rag’s last work before the Fountain of Youth would take place Sunday at Palm Meadows. Union Rag’s opponents in the 1 1/16-mile Fountain of Youth are expected to include Holy Bull (G3) winner Algorithms and track-record holder Discreet Dancer.
