When Team Valor International’s Animal Kingdom won the 137th Kentucky Derby (G1) Saturday at Churchill Downs, he became the fifth horse in the last six years to win the Triple Crown event after wintering at Gulfstream’s state-of-the-art training facility Palm Meadows.
Six of the last nine Kentucky Derby winners have now wintered at Palm Meadows: Animal Kingdom (2011), Super Saver (2010), Big Brown (2008), Street Sense (2007), Barbaro (2006) and Funny Cide (2003).
The eyes of the horse racing world shift from Churchill Downs to Pimlico Race Course as the Triple Crown players set their sights on Baltimore for the 136th running of the Preakness® Stakes on Saturday, May 21.
Animal Kingdom, Mucho Macho Man and Shackleford – the first, third and fourth place finishers in the Kentucky Derby (G1) – all spent their winter racing and training at Gulfstream Park and its state-of-the-art training facility Palm Meadows.
