Little NIck Starts 2012 with Breeders' Cup Hopes

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - In the game of horse racing the opportunities to get a horse from the claiming ranks to stakes company are few and far between.  But trainer Anthony Quartarolo has done just that with Little Nick, a seven year old bay gelding.  When the son of Tiger Ridge enters the starting gate this Sunday, January 15, in the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint, he will be making his fifth stakes start for Quartarolo.

Gulfstream Park Racing Secretary Dan Bork reminds horsemen that nominations to the $1 million Florida Derby (G1), the Florida Sunshine Millions program, and the $400,000 Holy Bull Stakes (G3) and $150,000 Forward Gal Stakes (G2) all close on Saturday. 

Eclipse Awards to be Broadcast Live on HRTV, DRF.COM and RTN

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters announced today that the 41st annual Eclipse Awards, presented by Daily Racing Form, The Stronach Group and Breeders’ Cup, will be broadcast live Monday, January 16 on HRTV, Racetrack Television Network (RTN) and DRF.com. The Eclipse Awards will take place at the Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, in Beverly Hills, Calif. 
 

Great Attack Likely Choice in Gulfstream Turf Sprint

HALLANDALE BEACH,, FL - Houyhnhnm Stable’s Great Attack ran a big race to finish fourth Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G2). The 5-year-old will begin his 2012 campaign Sunday as the horse to beat in the $60,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint, a five-furlong test in which he finished second last year.

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - Ol Memorial Stable and C. E. Glasscock’s Soaring Empire will try to score back-to-back victories in the $100,000 Hal’s Hope (G3) Saturday, a feat accomplished only once before when Chatain captured both the 2007 and 2008 runnings.

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - Ol Memorial Stable and C.E. Glasscock’s 5-year-old Soaring Empire, who captured the $100,000 Hal’s Hope Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park early last year over a field that included Rule and Morning Line, is back to defend his title in the one mile test on Saturday.
The Hal’s Hope will share the spotlight on Saturday’s 11-race program with the $100,000 Fort Lauderdale Stakes (G3) to be run at 1 1/16 miles on turf and a full field of 12 with Grade 1 winners Teaks North and Flat Out prominent in a wide-open contest.

Trainer Nick Zito added a sprinting star to his stable by subtracting a turn from the gritty Florida-bred’s racing regimen.

Dr. Kendall Hansen has owned horses on and off for 30 years. Over that time, his stable has consisted mostly of what he calls “nice claimers.”  

But years ago, with the hope that one day he would come across a star, Hansen began jotting down potential names and keeping them in a shoe box to be used on that special occasion.
