Little Mike Leads The Way In Canadian

By Ed Gray

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – A return to Grade 3 company was all it took for Little Mike to find the Gulfstream Park winner’s circle for the second time this year, resulting in a strong front-running victory in Sunday’s $150,000 Canadian Turf.

The 4-year-old gelding, who captured the Ft. Lauderdale (G3) on Jan. 9 with a front-running performance, found the 10-horse field in the Canadian a whole lot more accommodating than his rivals in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (G1) on Feb. 5.

Soldat On Course For Florida Derby

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - Following his dominant two-length victory in the $400,000 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G2), Soldat is “happy and in great shape” trainer Kiaran McLaughlin reported Sunday.

The 3-year-old colt by War Front led virtually every step of the way Saturday as the 7-5 betting favorite and finished ahead of Gourmet Dinner and morning-line favorite To Honor and Serve.

“The Florida Derby (G1); Sunday, April 3,” McLaughlin said.  “That’s the race we’ll point for now.”

Soldat Convincing In Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth

By Ed Gray

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – When Kiaran McLaughlin shipped his stable to Florida this winter he brought with him a colt that was a proven star on turf. But the lure of the Kentucky Derby is so strong that the New York-based trainer couldn’t resist the urge to give Soldat another chance to prove himself on dirt.

After watching Soldat post a convincing gate-to-wire victory in the $400,000 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park Saturday, McLaughlin will have a serious Kentucky Derby contender when his stable ships out of Florida in April.

Pletcher Puts On The 'Heat' In Davona Dale

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – R Heat Lightning had a troubled trip when finishing fourth in the Forward Gal (G2) in her 2011 debut at Gulfstream Park, but the sub-par performance might have caused some to speculate that the daughter of Trippi’s success last year was merely a result of  possessing a high level of precociousness.

The Todd Pletcher-trained 3-year-old filly dismissed such thoughts Saturday in emphatic fashion while dominating a strong field of eight by 7-1/4 lengths in the $250,000 Davona Dale Stakes (G2).

Sebastian Madrid has had a lucrative association with Gourmet Dinner, riding the Steve Standridge-trained colt to four victories in seven starts while earning more than $900,000 in purses for Our Sugar Bear Stable.
Yet, no mount is safe on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
Ramon Dominguez, the Eclipse Award-winning jockey of 2010, has been summoned from New York to replace Madrid for Saturday’s $400,000 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park.
