Team Block Stable and Richard Ege’s 5-year-old mare Askbut I Won’ttell and Peter Fuller’s 4-year-old homebred filly Trip for A.J. are among the most accomplished in a full field of 14 fillies and mares drawn for the $60,000 South Beach Stakes to be run at 7 ½ furlongs on turf Sunday at Gulfstream Park.
It’s been quite a ride for trainer Amy Tarrant and her 3-year-old filly Pomeroys Pistol over the past 12 months.
The daughter of Pomeroy began her 2011 year on Jan. 5 at Gulfstream Park – just a maiden win to her name – by finishing second in the Old Hat (G3) at odds of 34-1. Nearly 10 months to the day later, Pomeroys Pistol crossed the wire fourth, beaten just 3 ¾ lengths as the 6-1 third choice in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1).
Terra Di Sienna Stable’s 4-year-old filly Pica Slew has shown considerable talent in her limited career of six races from coast to coast. But she will likely be a longshot as she makes her first start since January at Santa Anita and first start in the care of trainer Brian Lynch in Saturday’s $100,000 Sugar Swirl Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park.
Trainer Terri Pompay had a lot of confidence in Zero Rate Policy going into Sunday’s $60,000 Sunshine State Stakes at Gulfstream Park. The son of Trippi had shown a fondness for the racing surface by breaking his maiden in his last start over it on April 23 and demonstrated that he had returned to peak form with a four-length triumph at Monmouth Park in his most recent start.
Gulfstream Park and The Village at Gulfstream Park will play host Wednesday, December 7 to a Wine Walk to benefit the Gulfstream Park Thoroughbred After-Care Program (www.gpaftercare.com).
For $10 per person, guests will be able to sample from five wine tasting stations and seven food stations throughout the Village, which is illuminated with holiday decorations for its nightly Festival of Lights show.
R. Larry Johnson’s 3-year-old Kentucky homebred filly Strike the Moon worked a sharp half-mile in 47 flat Saturday morning at Palm Meadows Training Center for trainer Michael Trombetta in preparation for a probable start in next Saturday’s $100,000 Sugar Swirl Stakes (G3) going six furlongs at Gulfstream Park.
