Ramseys, Maker Enjoy ‘Crowning’ Achievements at Gulfstream Park

Following Parent’s Honor’s upset victory in the $200,000 Claiming Crown, the ceremony in the Gulfstream Park winner’s circle Saturday might as well have been a coronation for owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey and trainer Mike Maker.

“I was saying we should be called the King and King and Queen – my wife, we’ve got to put her in – of the Claiming Crown,” said owner Ramsey, who visited the winner’s circle after four of the seven Claiming Crown races run on the opening day card of Gulfstream’s 2012-2013 meeting.

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - Fort Larned’s track record in the $100,000 Skip Away (G3) headlined the Florida Derby Day undercard, chock full of exciting finishes coming in the $100,000 Appleton (G3), $150,000 Orchid (G3), and $70,000 Sir Shackleton Stakes.

Grace Hall Establishes Strong Kentucky Oaks Credentials

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - Michael Dubb and partners’ 3-year-old filly Grace Hall more than atoned for finishing second as the odds-on choice in her first start of the season at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 25 in the Davona Dale Stakes (G2) with a commanding 6 ½ lengths victory in the $300,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) Saturday.

The victory could send her into the Kentucky Oaks (G1) Churchill Downs on May 4 as the favorite or at least one of the top choices, depending on results of other major previews around the nation yet to be run.

Awesome Maria Does Not Disappoint in Rampart Victory

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Awesome Maria was such an enormous standout in Saturday’s $150,000 Rampart (G3) at Gulfstream Park that the striking gray mare was sent to the starting gate at odds of 1-10.

The daughter of Maria’s Mon lived up to the bettors’ expectations with a thoroughly dominating 2 ¼-length victory in the 1 1/8-mile stakes for fillies and mares on the Florida Derby Day program. But the anticipated five-star performance wasn’t so easy on trainer Todd Pletcher.

Leparoux Maneuvers Newsdad to Pan American Victory

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Newsdad was heavily favored to prevail over just three rivals in the $150,000 Pan American (G2), but his jockey didn’t fall into the trap that a victory would come easily Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

Newsdad did go on to capture the 1 ½-mile turf event by two lengths, but not before Julien Leparoux considered all his options.

Tapitsfly Fills Void in Resume with Honey Fox Victory

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – It only takes a peek at the past performance lines in the Daily Racing Form to figure out that Tapitsfly’s triumph in Sunday’s $150,000 Honey Fox (G3) at Gulfstream Park can hardly be regarded as an upset.

What was surprising about the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner’s stretch-running victory in the mile turf event is that it marked her very first success in a graded stakes.

No Question, Musical Romance Much the Best in Inside Information

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Musical Romance hit a sour note in her first start of the year, finishing a well-beaten fourth in the Florida Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Sprint at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 28. The 2011 Eclipse Award-winning female sprinter not only tasted defeat but she also injured her left front foot during her disappointing 2012 debut to remain winless in five starts over the Gulfstream oval.

Clone of Dayatthespa Wins Hard-Fought Victory as Favorite in Herecomesthebride

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - Jerry Frankel, Ronald Frankel and Steve Laymon’s Dayatthespa was sent off as the 9-to-10 favorite in a field of eight 3-year-olds fillies in Sunday’s $150,000 Herecomesthebride Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park, but was all out to hold Steven Ciccarone’s 11-to-1 Regalo Mia safe for a neck victory in the 1 1/8 miles turf test.

Howe Great Hits Road to Derby with Palm Beach Stakes Score

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Howe Great strode from the Gulfstream Park turf course onto the Road to the Kentucky Derby Sunday with an impressive triumph in the $150,000 Palm Beach Stakes.

Trained by Graham Motion, who saddled Animal Kingdom for a Kentucky Derby (G1) upset victory last year, the 3-year-old colt withstood constant pressure before opening up in the stretch and holding off a strong bid by Dullahan by a length.

Trinniberg Goes Wire-to-Wire in Swale Stakes

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - Shivananda Parbhoo’s Trinniberg raced to the front soon after the start of the $150,000 Swale Stakes (G2) Saturday at Gulfstream Park and never appeared to be threatened in the seven-furlong test, coasting under the wire six lengths in front of Rey Wan Racing’s 45-to-1 longshot Hello Prince.
