HALLANDALE BEACH, FL - Tyler Gaffalione captured his second straight jockey’s title at Gulfstream Park Saturday, finishing off the summer meet with 81 victories.
A candidate for the 2015 Eclipse Award in the apprentice jockey category, the 21-year-old Davie, FL native finished 27 victories clear of runner-up Eddie Castro while leading all jockeys with mount earnings of more than $2.5 million.
Gaffalione, who topped the spring meet standings, was joined by Fred Brei’s Jacks or Better Farm and trainer Ralph Nicks as summer meet titlists.
Capping a banner summer meet with Fellowship’s 4 ½-length triumph in Saturday’s $500,000 In Reality Division of the Florida Sire Stakes, Jacks or Better Farm led all owners with 15 victories and more than $1.5 million in earnings. Teaming with trainer Stanley Gold, Jacks or Better Farm upped its record Florida Sire Stakes win total in the 2-year-old divisions to 18 with Fellowship’s impressive last-to-first performance in the 14-horse In Reality. Frank Calabrese, the spring meet leader, ranked second with 12 victories.
Ralph Nicks led all trainers with 34 winners while registering a 27-percent success rate during the summer meet. Nicks, whose runners earned more than $1.1 million, sent out three more winners than runner-up Antonio Sano. Gold led all trainers with starter earnings of more than $1.5 million.
Live racing shifts to Gulfstream Park West Wednesday for a 41-date meeting scheduled to run through Nov. 28. Gulfstream Park’s 2015-2016 Championship Meet is slated to get under way Dec. 5.
