HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Gulfstream Park has named Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Inc. (CTA) as the official charity of the Clásico Internacional del Caribe on Sunday, Dec. 8.

The Clásico Internacional del Caribe, the premier event for Thoroughbreds from Latin America and the Caribbean, is highlighted by the $300,000 Clásico del Caribe.

Horses competing in the event are arriving from Mexico, Venezuela, Panama, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Columbia and Trinidad and Tobago. Gulfstream remains the only pari-mutuel facility outside of Latin America or the Caribbean to play host to the event since its inception in 1966.

“Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Inc. thanks Gulfstream Park and the Clásico del Caribe for their support of CTA and horses that are racing in Puerto Rico and other islands,” said CTA co-founder, director and vice president Shelley Blodgett. “CTA is a 501(c)(3) and Puerto Rico non-profit organization that is both Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accredited and Platinum-rated by GuideStar. Over 1,200 U.S. Thoroughbreds race in Puerto Rico annually, and CTA is the only accredited Thoroughbred aftercare in the whole of the Caribbean. We are honored to serve our noble racehorses when their racing days are through, via retirement, rehabilitation, retraining, and adoption.”

“We are honored to partner with Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare as we prepare to host the Clásico Internacional del Caribe for the third consecutive year at Gulfstream Park,” said Mike Lakow, Vice President of Racing at Gulfstream Park. “The Stronach Group has been a leader in Thoroughbred aftercare, and we support accredited programs wherever they are located so that these amazing equine athletes can be retrained, rehomed and retired to safe and caring homes.”

The Clásico Internacional del Caribe is also popular with top U.S. jockeys John Velazquez, Javier Castellano, Jose Ortiz, Irad Ortiz Jr., Edgard Zayas and Emisael Jaramillo.
