Code Review, Canaletto Impressive in Debuts
1/25/2026Thursday’s Rainbow 6 Estimate $125,000
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Less than 24 hours after finishing first and second in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) with two 7-year-olds, trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. turned loose a 3-year-old colt to an impressive debut victory.
Code Review, a son of Uncle Mo who was purchased by C2 Racing for $575,000 as a yearling, broke on top and never looked back on his way to a 1 ½ length victory Sunday while covering six furlongs in 1:10.25.
Owned by C2, Ken Reimer, JRM Stables and Tami Bobo, Code Review moved through fractions of :21.80 and :44.90 under jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. to beat Amo Racing USA’s Amberjack. It was another length back to Royal Crescent in third.
“We just took our time with him because he’s shown so much talent,” Joseph said. “We’ve been almost bubble-wrapping him. He does get worked up a little in the morning. That was the thing: how was he going to handle the paddock and stuff. I was surprised how cool and collected he was.”
Joseph said Code Review may return in an allowance race. “Then, if everything goes good, send him to one of the Derby preps. Obviously, we’re a little behind schedule, but I think we have time to go an allowance and, hopefully, one of the Derby preps.”
Code Review is out of the Maryland mare Chattertown, a daughter of Speightstown who was stakes-placed in New York as a 3-year-old.
Later in the day, Canaletto, a $1 million son of Into Mischief owned by Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Peter Brant and Brook Smith, won going a mile on the main track for trainer Chad Brown. A $1 million son of Into Mischief, Canaletto drew away by eight lengths after moving three-wide around the turn to cover the distance in 1:36.28. Lost Money was second while Spartacus broke slowly from the rail and finished fifth.
The colt is a half-brother to Sandman and She Can’t Sing.
Other races on Sunday included Connect the Stars, a daughter of Connect trained by Mark Casse, breaking her maiden in her sixth attempt. Vasy, an Irish-bred son of Space Blues, won Race 5 by a neck at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf under jockey Tyler Gaffalione. Timeless Wonder, a daughter of Not This Time, returned a winner for trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez in her first race since April.
Racing resumes Thursday with 10 Races
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 will have its jackpot pool estimated at $125,000 when the Championship Meet resumes with a 10-race program Thursday.
First race post time is 12:20 p.m.
Thursday will be the second racing day since the popular multi-race wager produced multiple mandatory payouts of $71,527.20 on Pegasus World Cup Day Jan. 24. It was the third mandatory payout of the Championship Meet, which opened Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27.
The largest Rainbow 6 jackpot payout of the meet was $416,348.44 on Jan. 8.
In the Rainbow 6, the jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
Thursday’s sequence spans Races 5-10. The feature comes in Race 7, an optional claiming allowance for older Florida-breds scheduled for 7 ½ furlongs on the grass. Live Oak Plantation homebred Souper Attentive won going a mile over the course Jan. 1. Laura Murphy’s Win With Faith has been in the money in 12 of 17 starts including four straight third-place finishes, beaten a total of 5 ½ lengths.
The program also includes a $54,000 allowance event at seven furlongs for Florida-bred 3-year-olds.
The seven-horse field includes Prost, who won his debut by nine lengths for trainer Jose D’Angelo before finishing seventh in the $300,000 In Reality last time out in Nov. 29. Also coming out of the In Reality is Trelawny (fifth) and Hawk (ninth), who returned to win here Dec. 26.
Who’s hot: Championship Meet leading jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. rode back-to-back winners Sunday aboard Code Review ($3.20) in Race 3 and Sheshimaintenance ($3.40) in Race 4 and won his third race in Race 9 aboard Longbranch Lou ($7) … Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse sent out a pair of winners, Connect the Stars ($10.40) in Race 1 and The Brigade ($17) in Race 8 …
