Ehalt, Toler to be Recognized at Alibi Breakfast

Woods Memorial Award to Ehalt, Frutkoff to Toler

LAUREL, MD – Bob Ehalt of the Blood-Horse and photographer Charles Toler of Eclipse Sportswire will be recognized for their coverage of the 2025 Preakness (G1) during the Alibi Breakfast Thursday, May 14 at Laurel Park.

Ehalt will receive the David F. Woods Memorial Award for best Preakness story while Toler will be given the Jerry Frutkoff Photography Award for best Preakness image.

The Alibi Breakfast, which began in the 1930s on the porch of the historic Pimlico Race Course, features a gathering of owners, trainers, jockeys, media and fans to celebrate the Preakness and gain interesting and humorous race predictions.

Ehalt’s story, “Journalism Battles Through Traffic to Win Preakness,” was written on deadline and appeared on the Blood-Horse website May 17. Ehalt was the recipient of the 2016 David F. Woods for his story titled “American Pharoah Makes It Look Easy.” That story appeared on espn.com.

Toler, based in Clarksville, Md, is being recognized for his photo titled “The Bump,” which shows Preakness winner Journalism being boxed in and taking a bump from Goal Oriented. The photo appeared on the cover of the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred. Toler took the photograph from the rooftop fire escape at Pimlico Race Course.
