Graded Stakes Winner Haulin Ice Tries Turf in Abundantia
12/24/2025Field Includes Multiple Stakes Winners Love Appeals & Choose Joy
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Princess Rooney (G3) winner Haulin Ice will try something new Saturday when she takes to the turf while facing nine other fillies and mares in the $100,000 Abundantia at Gulfstream Park.
Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., Haulin Ice, the leading accredited Arkansas-bred in career money won, faces a competitive group in the five-furlong stakes including multiple-stakes winners Love Appeals and Choose Joy, Moon Joy, and Sporting Lady.
Haulin Ice, a 4-year-old filly by Coal Front, has won 10 of 18 starts. After winning the ‘Win & You’re In’ Princess Rooney, Haulin Ice finished sixth Nov. 1 in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) at Del Mar. This will be her first trip on the grass. Her dam, She’s Smoke, is an unraced daughter of Half Ours and Ready At Nine, who won sprinting on the turf at Lone Star.
“She was supposed to run next in an allowance race for Arkansas breds at Oaklawn Park, but when it didn’t fill, the owners said they wanted to give it a try with her on turf,” Joseph explained. “Pedigree wise, there isn’t a lot of grass in the family, but she is very fast. The question is whether she will carry her speed as well on turf as she does on dirt.”
Irad Ortiz Jr. has been named to ride Haulin Ice.
Love Appeals, trained by Miguel Clement, has a 6-2-3 record on the turf in 14 starts and enters off a second-place finish Sept. 13 in the Floral Park at six furlongs at Aqueduct. The 5-year-old daughter of Speightstown defended her title in the Incredible Revenge at Monmouth in August. Tyler Gaffalione rides the 2-1 morning-line favorite.
Steve Dwoskin’s Choose Joy, second in the Abundantia last year to graded stakes-placed Stone Silent, has finished first or second on this course and at this distance in 11 of 12 starts. The 8-year-old mare returned a winner from a 14-month layoff Oct. 3, sprinting on Tapeta, but finished seventh Nov. 30 on Tapeta in the Islamorada.
Mizoula, a 4-year-old daughter of Australia’s Zoustar, draws the rail. The well-traveled filly is undefeated in two starts at the distance and spent the past year with starts at Saratoga, Colonial, Delaware and Aqueduct. David Egan is named to ride for trainer Kerri Raven.
Trainer Jose D’Angelo will send out Sporting Lady, a daughter of Munnings. The filly was trained by Keri Brion earlier this year winning twice on the turf and finishing second twice. In her first start for D’Angelo, Sporting Lady finished third at five furlongs on Tapeta.
“Keri did an excellent job with her and she’s acclimated well to Florida,” D’Angelo said. “This is a bit tougher group, but she’s doing good and we think she’ll do well.”
