Gulfstream’s Princess Rooney Weekend Begins Friday

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Gulfstream Park’s weekend of racing, highlighted by Saturday’s $225,000 Princess Rooney (G3), a ‘Win and You’re In’ for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1), kicks off Friday with a nine-race program and a Rainbow 6 estimated pool of $100,000.
The seven-furlong Princess Rooney is one of three stakes Saturday along with the $100,000 Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint and $100,000 Ginger Punch. The Princess Rooney drew a field of seven, three trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., who will attempt to win the race for the fourth consecutive year following victories by Three Witches (2003), Soul of an Angel (2024) and Hailin Ice (2025).
From California, Michael McCarthy, who won the Princess Rooney in 2021-22 with Ce Ce, has entered Grade 1 stakes placed Simply Joking, while Leonard Powell has entered graded stakes placed No Bad Beats.
The Rainbow 6 begins with Race 4, a maiden claiming event at a mile on the main track for fillies and mares. Sista Sol, a 3-year-old daughter of Khozan, makes her debut for Monica McGoey. Kiona attempts to break her maiden in her 12th start while Curlina Star goes after her first win in 16 tries. The sequence includes two turf races including the final leg in Race 9. A field of eight 3-year-olds and up go five furlongs. Shinyhappygroovy enters off a second-place finish going a mile on the turf July 3 as the beaten favorite. Leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. sends out Unpredictable, third sprinting on Tapeta last time out after finishing off the board in two turf races here over the winter for William Walden.
Gulfstream’s Players Place Pick 8 begins with Race 2, a maiden claimer for fillies and mares at 7 ½ furlongs on the turf. Zenick draws the rail and goes out first time off the claim for trainer David Fawkes, who is 40-percent first time off claim.
The Summer Sweep Pick 5 begins with Gulfstream’s Race 8 and will include three races for Indiana sired horses from Horseshoe Indianapolis.
The jackpot pool in the Rainbow 6 is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
On mandatory payout days, the entire pool is disbursed to the bettor or bettors holding tickets with the most winners in the six-race sequence. The Royal Palm Meet concludes Monday with an eighth consecutive mandatory payout.
