Monroe, Mr. Steele Stakes Co-Headline Saturday Card
5/15/202620-Cent Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Estimated at $100,000
HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – The $100,000 Monroe and the $100,000 Mr. Steele will co-headline an 11-race program with a 1 p.m. first-race post time Saturday at Gulfstream Park.
The Mr. Steele, a 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for 4-year-olds and up in Race 9, will be featured in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 sequence that will span Races 5-11.
Joe Orseno-trained Horsepower, an ultra-consistent 5-year-old gelding who finished second in the Henry Clark at Laurel Park April 18, has been installed as the 2-1 morning-line favorite in a field of eight. Gran Orient, a Group 1 winner in Chile who is coming off an allowance win at Santa Anita April 3, is scheduled to make his first start for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. Carlos David-trained Tank is coming off a front-running victory in the FHBPA Turf for Florida-breds.
The Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is expected to grow to an estimated $100,000 Saturday. The popular multi-race wager went unsolved Friday on the first racing day following a mandatory payout.
In the Rainbow 6, the jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. On mandatory payout days, the entire pool is disbursed to the bettor or bettors holding tickets with the most winners in the six-race sequence.
Joseph, who will saddle Bull by the Horns for Saturday’s 151st Preakness Stakes (G1) at Laurel Park, is represented by five entrants in the nine-horse field assembled for the Monroe, including Silver Moonlight, a winner of six of 15 career starts who is coming off a tiring seventh in the Sand Springs on the Curlin Florida Derby undercard March 28.
