HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Calypso Stables 2024 LLC’s Redland Rebels, who showed flashes of talent on dirt while competing on the Road to the Kentucky Derby (G1) during the spring, will be on his preferred footing at Gulfstream Park Sunday when he will got to post as the 2-1 morning-line favorite for the turf feature.

Trainer Patrick Biancone expects the 3-year-old son of Uncle Chuck, who set the pace into the stretch before finishing fourth in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) and sixth in the Arkansas Derby (G1), to put his best foot forward in Race 9, a 1 1/16-mile optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds and up on turf.

Redland Rebels broke his maiden in his second career start and turf debut at Gulfstream last year before going on hiatus. He returned to action during the 2025-2026 Championship Meet in the Jan. 31 Kitten’s Joy, a 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for 3-year-olds in which he set the pace before coming up a neck short of victory following a heated stretch battle.

“He always was a good 2-year-old. We did try the Derby trail. After that we gave him a break. He’s comeback good and we expect a good winter,” Biancone said.

Redland Rebels returned to the Gulfstream winner’s circle as a gelding Aug. 15 with an off-the-pace 1 3/4-length turf score in a 1 1/16-mile allowance. Last time out, he set a pressured pace before falling a neck short of victory in a mile-and-70-yard allowance that was rained off the turf course and run on the Tapeta course.

“He ran good the other day, but he’s not as effective on the Tapeta as he is on the turf,” Biancone said. “He’s trained good and is in good form. We’re looking forward to the race.”

Redland Rebels, who will be ridden back by J. G. Torrealba, will face seven rivals in Race 9, which will serve as the final leg of Sunday’s 20-cent Rainbow 6 sequence.

The Race 9 feature will also be included in the sequences for the 1 S/T Coast-to-Coast Pick 5 and the Sunset Six, a pair of player-friendly $1 base wagers with a 15-percent takeout that includes races at Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita Park.

Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Estimated at $500K for Sunday Mandatory

A mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be held Sunday at Gulfstream Park, where the jackpot pool is expected to grow to an estimated $500,000.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the third racing day following a $90,495.60 jackpot hit, leaving a $25,324.26 carryover going into Sunday’s mandatory payout.

In the Rainbow 6, the jackpot pool is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. On mandatory payout days, the entire pool is disbursed to the bettor or bettors holding tickets with the most winners in the six-race sequence.

The Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 4-9, kicked off by a mile optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds and up. Pioneer Prince is scheduled to make his first start off the claim for trainer Sam Wilensky while coming off a victory in a mile $16,000 claiming race at Del Mar Sept. 6. Mark Passley-trained Sneak Preview and Victor Barboza Jr.-trained Lou the Body, who finished 1-2 under Sunday’s conditions last time out, are also entered in the seven-horse field.

A mile maiden claimer on turf that drew a field of 10 2-year-olds follows in Race 5. Race 6, a one-turn mile $10,000 claimer for fillies and mares, could well be a popular ‘spread’ leg.

Fernando De La Cruz, Horseshow Indianapolis’ leading rider, who was in town to ride Mattingly in Saturday’s co-feature, stays around to ride Joe Orseno-trained Sticky McShnickens in Race 7, a five-furlong $35,000 claimer for 3-year-olds and up on turf. Bettors must decide if he can make a difference with an ultra-consistent runner who has finished second or third in 15 of 23 starts but only one win.

Barboza-trained Full Nelson seeks his third-straight victory on Tapeta in Race 8, a mile-and-70-yard optional claiming allowance on the all-weather surface in Race 8.

Patrick Biancone-trained Redland Rebels could well be a popular ‘single’ in Race 9, a mile optional claiming feature for 3-yer-olds and up on turf.

Heading into Sunday’s $1 Players’ Place Pick 8 wagering in Race 2, there will be a carryover of $11,542.32.
