Fall Sunshine Meet Resumes with Nine-Race Program Friday

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Showing no ill effects from his involvement in a spill the previous afternoon, jockey Leonel Reyes returned to ride five winners on Sunday’s nine-race program at Gulfstream Park.

Reyes, 40, won each of his races consecutively – Wine Candy ($3.40) in Race 2, Awesome Noah ($5.80) in Race 3, Lady Chance ($4.20) in Race 4, Ciborio ($6) in Race 5 and Oxar ($3.40) in Race 6. His streak ended when he ran third aboard Paris Surprise in Race 7.

Three of Reyes’ winners – Awesome Noah, Ciborio and Oxar – are trained by Jose D’Angelo.

“It’s very special because of what happened yesterday. To win five races in a row is amazing,” Reyes said. “Yesterday I fell but today I feel great, stronger.”

Reyes was shaken up but unhurt when his mount, Redhotnotbothered, clipped heels with Smoke an a Pancake on the backstretch of Saturday’s Race 6, sending the native of Venezuela to the ground. He was able to walk off the track but took off his three remaining mounts including Miss Mary Nell, who went on to win the $100,000 Ginger Punch under Jonathan Ocasio.

“When I fell I felt some pain and a little sore, but I take a little a chance to ride today,” Reyes said. “It’s been a great day.”

Reyes also won five races, including four in a row, July 11 at Gulfstream. The track record is seven consecutive wins set by Irad Ortiz Jr. Feb. 3, 2023.

Mandatory Rainbow 6 Payout Yields Multiple $100 Payoffs

A mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool yielded multiple payoffs of $100.82 Sunday at Gulfstream Park.

Getaholdayourself ($5.40) captured the Race 9 finale, a claiming event for fillies and mares 3 and up, and complete the winning 5-2-7-1-5-5 combination.

Other winners in the sequence were Lady Chance ($4.20) in Race 4, Ciborio ($6) in Race 5, Oxar ($3.40) in Race 6, High Lateen ($13) in Race 7 and R Delray ($4.80) in Race 8.

A total of $482,075 was bet into the Rainbow 6 Sunday on top of a $35,438.33 carryover from Saturday’s Princess Rooney (G3) program, for a grand total of $517,513.

In the Rainbow 6, the jackpot pool is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

On mandatory payout days, the entire pool is disbursed to the bettor or bettors holding tickets with the most winners in the six-race sequence. Anotehr mandatory payout is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 20.

The fall Sunshine Meet resumes with a nine-race program Friday starting at 12:20 p.m. The feature comes in Race 8, an open allowance for fillies and mares 3 and up sprinting six furlongs on the main track that includes stakes-placed Dakota’s Lil Auror, Love Like Lucy and Vita Mia.

Notes: Jockey Diego Herrera doubled Sunday aboard High Lateen ($13) in Race 7 and Getaholdayourself ($5.40) in Race 9. Herrera was honored after Race 7 for winning the Royal Palm Meet riding title … Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. and owner Bruno Schickedanz were also recognized for leading the Royal Palm Meet standings.
