HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Robert Cotran’s Rezasrolex earned his seventh consecutive trip to the Gulfstream Park winner’s circle Friday with a dominating 3 ½-length victory in Race 7, a 5 ½-furlong optional claiming allowance for Florida-breds on Tapeta.
Rezasrolex, the 2-5 favorite, closely attended pacesetter Gabaldon for a half-mile in 44.98 seconds before moving away through the stretch under confident handling by jockey Edgard Zayas. The 4-year-old gelded son of Bucchero completed the 5 ½-furlong distance in 1:03.33 to score for the ninth time in his last 10 starts, all on the all-weather surface.
“He is a very cool horse. My only worry was that all the speed was on the outside, so I just didn’t want to get pinched on the inside. He’s a horse that kind of likes to be free running. There was plenty of speed there,” Zayas said. “I didn’t want to go head-to-head with Gabaldon, so it worked out perfect. He opened up a little bit, so I was able to take back and just sit second on the outside. It was just cruise control from there.”
Zayas has been aboard Rezasrolex for all but one of his last seven starts.
“It’s great. He’s a very smart horse and he knows where the wire is,” Zayas said. “He’s awesome to ride, to be honest.”
Trained by Joe Orseno, a big fan of the stallion Bucchero, Rezasrolex was claimed out of a victory in a starter optional claimer at Gulfstream Dec. 7, 2023.
Gabaldon, who won the $100,000 Royal Palm Juvenile at Gulfstream last year before finishing second in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot, was making his first start over an all-weather surface while facing older horses Friday, finishing second, a nose ahead of late-closing Sticky McShnickens.
Saturday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Estimated at $100,000
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is expected to grow to an estimated $100,000 Saturday at Gulfstream Park, where the popular multi-race wager went unsolved Friday for the fourth racing days following a mandatory payout.
Saturday’s Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 6-11, featuring the $75,000 Juvenile Fillies Sprint in Race 9. La Dolce Vita, a smart front-running maiden winner last time out, and Tessellate, a debut winner who finished in the money in a pair of subsequent stakes, will represent leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.in the 6 ½-furlong race for 2-year-olds fillies. Trainer Jose Castro’s Epigram may be the one to catch coming off a sharp front-running debut victory.
A well-stocked seven-furlong maiden special weight for 2-year-olds will precede the Juvenile Fillies Sprint in Race 8. The eight-horse field includes first-time starters by Curlin, Gun Runner, Knicks Go and More Than Ready. Joseph-trained Ramajay is the 8-5 morning-line favorite on the basis of his close-up second-place finish in his Oct. 11 debut at Keeneland.
In the Rainbow 6, the jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
