HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – There will be an estimated jackpot pool of $200,000 in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 for Saturday’s 11-race Pegasus Preview Day program at Gulfstream Park.
A total of $105,616 was put into the popular multi-race wager Friday, the second racing day since the Rainbow 6 was solved for a life-changing $489,592.94 payout Dec. 15.
Saturday’s sequence spans Races 6-11 and concludes with four of the day’s five stakes – the $140,000 Janus in Race 8, $165,000 Harlan’s Holiday (G3) in Race 9, $215,000 Fort Lauderdale (G2) in Race 10 and $140,000 Suwannee River (G3) in Race 11.
The Harlan’s Holiday for 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/16 miles on the main track serves as prep for the $3 million Pegasus World Cup (G1). Leading contenders include Tumbarumba, winner of the Fred Hooper (G3) on the Pegasus undercard in January; March 2 Gulfstream Park Mile (G2) winner Steal Sunshine and 2023 Holy Bull (G3) winner Rocket Can.
The Fort Lauderdale scheduled for 1 1/8 miles on the grass is a prep for the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1). Among the field of nine 3-year-olds and up are Grade 1 winner Win for the Money; five-time graded-stakes winner Emmanuel; multimillionaire Grand Sonata and fellow graded-stakes winners Major Dude and Fort Washington.
The one-mile Suwannee River for fillies and mares 3 and up on grass is a prep for the $500,000 Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf (G2). Ocean Club, last out winner of the one-mile Noble Damsel (G3) Sept. 21 at Aqueduct is the lukewarm 4-1 program favorite in a competitive group of 12 that includes Nov. 10 Long Island (G3) winner Be Your Best and Cardinal (G3) runner-up Saffron Moon.
Arzak, beaten just 1 ½ lengths when sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) Nov. 2; Yes I Am Free, a two-time winner of the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint (G3); and 8-year-old Xy Speed, 7-for-14 lifetime at Gulfstream, are prominent among 12 in the Janus for 3-year-olds and up sprinting five furlongs on the grass.
The Rainbow 6 carryover pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
Saturday’s other stakes is the $140,000 Sugar Swirl for fillies and mares 3 and up going six furlongs in Race 4, led by Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained stablemates R Harper Rose, winner of Gulfstream’s Feb. 3 Forward Gal (G3), and Charles Town Oaks (G2) and Miss Preakness (G3) winner Mystic Lake.
First race post time is 12:20 p.m.
Trainer Jose D’Angelo Enjoys Four-Win Day Friday
Jose D’Angelo closed the gap on three-time defending Championship Meet leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. by sending out four winners Friday at Gulfstream Park.
Second-time starter Altamira Sur ($5), a 2-year-old bay filly by Honor A.P., captured the opener as the 3-2 favorite under jockey Luis Saez to get D’Angelo’s day started.
“I always try to think positive. The horse worked pretty good last week, so I was pretty sure it was going to be a good race,” D’Angelo said. “When the filly won the first race, I thought, ‘We are starting off on the right foot.’ Every horse was ready for today.”
D’Angelo then reeled off three straight wins 2-year-old colt Mr Tyson in Race 3, a maiden special weight on the all-weather Tapeta; 4-year-old filly One of One ($3) in Race 4, also on the Tapeta; and 4-year-old gelding Rotterdam ($6) in Race 5 going 1 1/16 miles on the grass. One of One was claimed out of the race for $17,500.
“It’s a tough game. You work hard every single day and you need to have luck the day of the race,” D’Angelo said. “More than the luck, you have to have the horses ready and going the right way. I’m just very thankful to God and my family and my team to let us win some races together.”
D’Angelo now has 12 wins from 43 starters (28 percent) at the 2024-2025 Championship Meet, which opened Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28. Joseph leads the way with 13 wins from 54 starters (24 percent).
Who’s Hot: Jockey Luis Saez notched a three-win day Friday aboard Mr Tyson ($3.40) in Race 3, Rotterdam ($6) in Race 5 and Junction Road ($7.20) in Race 9. Championship Meet leading rider Irad Ortiz Jr. doubled with Altamira Sur ($5) in Race 1 and One of One ($3) in Race 4.
