HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is expected to grow to an estimated $250,000 Saturday at Gulfstream Park, where the $125,000 Tropical Park Derby and the $125,000 Tropical Park Oaks will co-headline the six-race sequence for the popular multi-race wager.
The popular multi-race wager went unsolved Friday for the seventh consecutive racing day following a Nov. 29 mandatory payout.
The Tropical Park Derby, a 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for 3-year-olds that drew a field of 12, will close out the Rainbow 6 sequence that will span Races 6-11.
Michael Trombetta-trained Souper Forces is scheduled to seek his fourth victory without defeat in the Tropical Park Derby after winning his debut on Tapeta at Presque Isle, capturing a turf allowance at Colonial and taking down his stakes debut in the Showing Up on turf at Gulfstream. Brad Cox-trained Chapman’s Peak, a Godolphin homebred who is coming off a photo-finish heartbreaker in the Commonwealth Turf (G3) at Churchill Downs, is the 5-2 morning-line favorite in a full field of 12.
Cox will also be represented by the morning-line favorite for the Tropical Park Oaks, a 1 1/16-mile turf stakes for 3-year-old fillies carded as Race 8. Cox-trained Destino d’Oro, a Grade 3 stakes winner who most recently finished off the board in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1) at Keeneland. Trombetta will also be represented in the Oaks by Souper Williwaw, a daughter of Hard Spun who will make her stakes debut while seeking her third victory in a row.
Jackson Hole, $1.2M Son of Nyquist, Debuts Saturday
Along with the Tropical Park Oaks and Tropical Park Derby, Saturday’s 11-race program at Gulfstream Park will also feature a couple maiden special weight races for 2-year-olds of interest.
In Race 4, a seven-furlong event for colts, Jackson Hole, a $1.3 million son of 2016 Florida Derby (G1) and Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Nyquist, makes his debut against six others. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Jackson Hole sold at the Keeneland September Sale as a yearling and is owned by WinStar Farm LLC, CHC Inc, and First Go Racing LLC. Jackson Hole’s competition includes Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Ramajay, second in both his previous starts, and first-time starters Maykomotion, a son of Vekoma trained by George Weaver, and Ace Jack Deuce, a son of 2018 Florida Derby winner Audible trained by Ken McPeek.
In Race 9, a mile event for 2-year-old fillies, the field includes Betty’s Pearl and Little Georgie.
Betty’s Pearl was second in her debut Oct. 5 at Keeneland and third Nov. 13 at Churchill Downs. The Brian Lynch-trained daughter of Munnings will go two turns for the first time Saturday. Little Georgie, trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., was second in her debut here Oct. 24 at six furlongs. The daughter of Charlatan is out of Swingit, who has produced multiple Grade 2 winner Travel Column and Neolithic, third in the 2017 Pegasus World Cup (G1) and 2017 Woodward (G1).
Irad Ortiz Jr. Rides 1000th Gulfstream Park Winner
Favored White Claw Woman ($3) pulled away from Pocket Pair in mid-stretch and drew off under jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. to give the five-time Eclipse Award winner his 1,000th career victory at Gulfstream Park.
The Race 5 victory was the second of the day for the 33-year-old Ortiz and eighth from his first 19 starts (42 percent) during the 2025-2026 Championship Meet that opened Thanksgiving Day. He has been leading rider at Gulfstream the past two winters and has claimed a record seven Championship Meet titles overall.
“It’s great. It’s a pretty special accomplishment for us,” said Ortiz, who rode Todd Pletcher-trained Always Ready ($3) to victory in Friday’s opener. “I’m so happy for everyone that supports me here. I’ve had a lot of support since I’ve gotten here.”
Owned by David Bernsen and trained by Jose D’Angelo, White Claw Woman ($3) settled in third through a half-mile in the claiming event for 3-year-olds and up before engaging with Pocket Pair at the top of the stretch and edging clear late to win by a half-length in 1:44.22 for 1 1/16 miles on the all-weather Tapeta course.
On Dec. 4, his first day of the 2025-2026 Championship Meet, Ortiz won with four of five mounts and broke his own single-season earnings record which now stands at more than $39.5 million. For his career he owns over 4,400 wins and $377 million in purses earned.
Ortiz’s first full winter at Gulfstream was 2017-2018, when he won 101 races. He was leading rider from 2018-2019 to 2020-2021, clinching the latter with a meet-record 140 wins.
“I’ve had huge support from everyone since I decided to move to Gulfstream,” Ortiz said. “Since then I fell in love with the place. I love being here in the wintertime. I look forward to getting here and start working and try to find some young talent. We’ve been so lucky.”
Ortiz has nine mounts, four in stakes, at Turfway Park Saturday before returning to Gulfstream for five races Sunday.
“We’ve got to keep going,” Ortiz said. “We’ve had a great year so far, so we are trying to close the year strong.”
Note: Daniel Alonso’s Skippylongstocking breezed four furlongs in 47.70 seconds at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream’s satellite training facility in Palm Beach County, Friday in preparation for a planned start in the Dec. 20 Harlan’s Holiday (G3). The Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained 6-year-old, who was credited with the second fastest of 53 workouts recorded at the distance, is scheduled to use the 1 1/16-mile Harlan’s Holiday as a steppingstone to the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream Jan. 24. Skippylongstocking finished third in last season’s Pegasus behind Joseph stablemate White Abarrio.
Who’s Hot: Irad Ortiz Jr. rode a pair of winners, scoring aboard Always Ready ($3) in Race 1 and White Claw Woman ($3) in Race 5. Junior Alvarado also doubled aboard Steeze ($2.20) in Race 4 and Rockies Balboa ($3.20) in Race 8.
