HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Impressed as he was with his stable star’s dominant debut victory three weeks earlier, trainer Bobby Dibona was even more amazed by Sum of Success’ command performance in Monday’s $100,000 FHBPA In Summation at Gulfstream Park.

K Johnston Racing, Michael and Jules Iavarone and Hopeless Stables’ promising colt Sum of Success ($2.60) put away longshot stalker It’s Smoking leaving the far turn and opened up through the stretch to a popular 11 ½-length victory in the six-furlong sprint for Florida-bred juveniles.

Sum of Success, a son of Grade 1-winning sprinter Win Win Win and a grandson of In Summation bred by Liz and Norman Wilson’s Oakleaf Farm in Ocala, Fla., was never asked by jockey Jonathan Ocasio while covering a fast main track in 1:10.14.

“What can I say? You dream about having a nice horse, and I know what makes a great horse – a smart mind, and they’re fast. I knew from the beginning this horse possessed those talents. He’s quite amazing,” Dibona said. “We really haven’t let him run. He hasn’t had to do anything. It’s pretty exciting to see what we’re going to do.”

The overwhelming 1-5 favorite over five rivals, all of which were also coming off wins, Sum of Success broke alertly from Post 3 and easily outran the group to get established on the lead through a quarter-mile in 22.06 seconds. It’s Smoking, a 7 ¼-length maiden special weight winner over the track May 22, moved up to press Sum of Success on his outside in a half that went 44.64.

Ocasio shook the reins midway around the far turn and Sum of Success responded by opening up on a tiring It’s Smoking, blazing five furlongs in 56.95 seconds and cruising alone through the lane. Boyhood Dream made a late run to edge It’s Smoking by 2 ¼ lengths for second.

“They went at him a little bit and he was just playing,” Dibona said. “I think he broke his heart.”

American Roadster ran fourth, a neck behind It’s Smoking, followed by Road to Midnight and Spicy Taco. Sum of Success beat state-breds by 7 ½ lengths in 58.13 seconds for five furlongs in a July 20 maiden special weight at Gulfstream.

Dibona is a multiple graded-stakes winner, most recently with still active 7-year-old Steal Sunshine, a lifetime earner of $891,170 in purses whose biggest victory came in the 2024 Gulfstream Park Mile (G2). Dibona had been winless in his 21 previous stakes attempts.

“I don’t how long it goes back but [Iavarone] had to pick on me. I just was glad to get rid of that,” Dibona said. “He’s a great guy. Mike bought in after that first race and it’s great to have him with us.”

Upcoming stakes at Gulfstream for 2-year-olds include the $150,000 FHBPA Express Tour sprinting seven furlongs Sept. 5 on opening weekend of the Sunshine Meet, and the $250,000 Three Rules, also for Florida-breds, going a one-turn mile Oct. 3.

“We’re trying to get somewhere. There’s a lot of questions that have to be answered,” Dibona said. “How far he wants to go, I don’t know. Going seven-eighths and going a mile and a sixteenth are two different things. We’ll let him kind of unwind and digest a little bit.

“I have the Florida-bred races lined up where he’s going to just be dominant and probably makes the most sense and save the challenges for his 3-year-old season,” he added. “That’s kind of what I’m thinking now, go seven [furlongs] and then a mile, which is within his scope. But they’re talking about Breeders’ Cup with the horse, so it’s a little tricky.”

Bred in Florida by Arthur Appleton and owned by Waterford Stable, In Summation won 12 of 29 career starts and more than $1.2 million in purses from 2005-09. Eleven of his wins came in stakes, including graded triumphs in the 2007 Bing Crosby Handicap (G1), 2008 Palos Verdes Handicap (G2) and 2008 and 2009 El Conejo Handicap (G3).

Pegasus and Florida Derby Winner White Abarrio Retired

C2 Racing’s Pegasus World Cup (G1), Florida Derby (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner White Abarrio, who spent the majority of his time stabled at Gulfstream Park with trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., has been retired.

The gray 7-year-old retires with earnings of more than $8.5 million and 11 wins in 28 starts. He won the 2022 Holy Bull (G3) and Florida Derby, the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic and the 2025 Pegasus and Ghostzapper (G3).

In a social media post, C2 called the past seven years “an unforgettable journey.”

Mandatory Rainbow 6 Payout Yields Multiple $7,639 Payoffs

A mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool yielded multiple payoffs of $7,639.26 on the fifth of eight consecutive Monday programs at Gulfstream Park.

Calathea ($6), beaten a neck in her prior start, rallied late to take the Race 8 finale, an optional claiming allowance going 1 1/16 miles on the grass, and complete the winning 6-5-2-3-5-4 combination.

Other winners in the sequence were Rockazo ($43.20) in Race 3, Noble Prince ($7.60) in Race 4, Image ($12.40) in Race 5, Sum of Success ($2.60) in Race 6, the $100,000 FHBPA In Summation, and Hello Poochy Lou ($13.60) in Race 7. There were xxx winning tickets.

A total of $334,214 was bet into the Rainbow 6 Monday on top of a $24,168.14 carryover from Sunday’s program, for a grand total of $358,382.

In the Rainbow 6, the jackpot pool is paid out only when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

On mandatory payout days, the entire pool is disbursed to the bettor or bettors holding tickets with the most winners in the six-race sequence.

The Rainbow 6 has produced multiple mandatory payouts of $48,609.94 July 13, $5,084.66 July 20, $406.32 July 27 and $195.42 Aug. 3. There will be a mandatory payout every Monday at Gulfstream through the conclusion of the Royal Palm Meet Aug. 31.

Live racing resumes Saturday at Gulfstream, when the Rainbow 6 begins anew covering Races 5-10 and includes the $100,000 Sheer Drama Handicap for fillies and mares 43 and up sprinting seven furlongs on the main track.

Monday’s 50-cent Late Pick 5 (Races 4-8) returned $623.55. There were payouts of $2,704.70 in the $1 Players Place Pick 8 (Races 1-8), $111.30 in the $3 Late Pick 3 (Races 6-8) and $146 in the $5 Late Double (Races 7-8).
