Sunday’s Rainbow 6 Mandatory Pool Estimated at $4 Million
1/26/2025HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – The pool of Sunday’s mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 at Gulfstream Park is estimated to be $4 million or more.
Sunday’s sequence begins with Race 6, a one-mile turf event for 4-year-olds and up and concludes with Race 11, a maiden special weight event at a mile on the turf for 3-year-old fillies.
Race 6: 4-year-olds and up, mile turf
An evenly matched group of older horses. King d’Oro (4-1_ has won two of his last three (one on turf) and is 2-3-2 in nine turf races. Irad Ortiz Jr., who won aboard the 5-year-old last time, returns. Michael Maker saddles Inflation Nation (6-1), who won his last race in October over Aqueduct’s turf. Tyler Gaffalione rides. Brian Lynch saddles Royal Salute (15-1), third here last time out off a two-month layoff.
Race 7: 3-year-old maidens, 1 1/6-mile, main track
Trainer Todd Pletcher has the two top choices. He saddles the 2-1 favorite in Adventurist, a $500,000 son of Curlin making his debut with Ortiz Jr., and No Escape (5-2), second in his debut at Tampa last month. Murabeh was fifth in his debut here on the turf for Saffie Joseph Jr., who is 25 percent in maidens making their second start.
Race 8: Fillies and mares, 1 1/16-mile, turf
A dozen go to post including Diamond Vega (7-2), a Chad Brown-trained mare making her second U.S. start after racing in the U.K. and Germany. Ortiz Jr. rides. Anybody But You, a 4-year-old filly, won her debut here last month for Brendan Walsh. Movin’ On Up and Spinning Colors might show speed.
Race 9: 4-year-olds and up, 6 ½ furlongs, main track
Bold Journey is the 9-5 favorite, but he makes his first start since finishing 10th in March in the Golden Shaheen (G1) in Dubai. Bill Mott trains, Gaffalione rides. Breaking just inside is Cyclone Mischief, who just missed last time out for trainer Dale Romans at Churchill Downs. Ortiz Jr. rides. Mr Skylight could be coming late.
Race 10: 4-year-olds and up, five furlongs, turf
Another wide-open field of 12 with Jefe de Obra the favorite for trainer Wesley Ward who missed by nose last time out here at the distance and on the course. John Velazquez is aboard. Tap Gold, trained by Rohan Crichton, has three wins and two seconds in his last five starts over turf and Tapeta. Born Flashy gets blinkers for trainer Ian Wilkes and jockey Edgard Zayas.
Race 11: 3-year-old maiden fillies, mile turf
A very competitive group with a tepid 3-1 morning-line favorite in Brown Sugar, a $400,000 daughter of Twirling Candy who finished third in her debut at Churchill Downs despite a troubled trip. Blinkers go on today for jockey Luis Saez. Moon Gate (7-2) was competitive in two prior starts at Aqueduct and Saratoga for trainer Christophe Clement. This will be her first race since July. Javier Castellano rides. Leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. saddles Candy Buzz (12-) with Gaffalione and Champagne Brunch (4-1) with Ortiz Jr. Classic Q was fourth in her debut here for trainer Mark Casse last month.
On mandatory-payout days, the entire Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors with the most winners in the wager’s six-race sequence. The carryover jackpot is usually only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
Dreaming of Mo Wins South Beach, Smokin’ T Takes Carousel Club
Blue Devil Racing Stable’s 5-year-old mare Dreaming of Mo found room inside at the top of the stretch and powered through the lane for a 2 ¼-length season-opening victory in Saturday’s $100,000 South Beach overnight handicap.
The South Beach for older fillies and mares kicked off the stakes portion of a blockbuster Pegasus World Cup Day program as the first of 10 stakes, seven graded, worth $5.625 million in purses. It was the first of two one-mile, 70-yard overnight handicaps on the all-weather Tapeta course, followed by the $100,000 Carousel Club for 4-year-olds and up.
Ridden by Hall of Famer Javier Castellano for trainer Dale Romans, Dreaming of Mo ($19.80) – a $700,000 daughter of champion Uncle Mo – completed the distance in 1:39.08 to earn her fourth career victory and first in stakes company.
Castellano settled Dreaming of Mo in fourth as 2-1 favorite Dana’s Beauty led the way through splits of 24.24 and 48.08 seconds tracked by 40-1 longshot Golden Ghost and multiple stakes winner Charlie’s Wish. Dana’s Beauty drifted slightly exiting the far turn leaving plenty of room for Dreaming of Mo to slip through. Charlie’s Wish edged Dana’s Beauty for second, with Tutta La Vita and Sun Bee dead-heating for fourth.
In the Carousel Club, Mrs. Gay Smith’s Smokin’ T ($16.20) came with a steady run down the center of the track to reel in favored front-runner Jerry the Nipper and win first time for his new connections.
Smokin’ T had six wins, three in stakes including the 2023 River City (G3), with $841,048 in purse earnings from 24 starts for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey before being sold for $160,000 at Keeneland horses of racing age sale last November.
Stablemate Exact Estimate took the early initiative and went a quarter-mile in 23.35 seconds and a half in 47.19 with Jerry the Nipper in closest pursuit. Jerry the Nipper took over the top spot after six furlongs in 1:10.49 and held the lead past the eighth pole before being overtaken by a determined Smokin’ T on the outside, who crossed the wire 1 ¼ lengths in front . In a Jam ran third, with Classic Mo Town fourth and Stanley House fifth.
The winning time was 1:38.80.
NOTES
Atone, winner of the 2023 Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1), returned to his greatest triumph when winning Saturday’s third race, an allowance optional claimer. The 8-year-old had gone 13 races without a victory since the 2023 Pegasus….
