Super Chow, Jorge Ruiz Reunite for Saturday’s Mr. Prospector
12/24/2025HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Lea Farms LLC’s Super Chow will be in search of his 10th stakes victory and fourth graded-stakes score Saturday at Gulfstream Park, where the 5-year-old son of Lord Nelson is scheduled to face up to seven rivals in the $125,000 Mr. Prospector (G3).
Super Chow’s chances of winning the seven-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up may well hinge on the starting status of even-money morning-line favorite White Abarrio, which may not be known until Friday.
In any event, trainer Jorge Delgado is looking for Super Chow to return from a two-month break following a fifth-place finish in a Delaware Park stakes in which he was far back throughout while lacking his customary early speed.
“We’re very happy and encouraged for this race. We gave him some time off after his last race and he’s really coming around,” Delgado said. “His workouts in the morning make us expect a good performance.”
Super Chow, whose enduring success has been primarily achieved at six furlongs, finished sixth after setting a pressured pace in last year’s Mr. Prospector. However, his trainer is confident that seven furlongs won’t be beyond his reach under Jorge Ruiz Saturday.
“He won a graded stakes in New York at seven furlongs. It was a different track and different surface. But I don’t think it will make a difference with the right trip,” said Delgado, whose multiple graded-stakes winner is rated at 20-1 on the morning line. “He has a good post. Jorge Ruiz won on him the only two times he has ridden him. So he knows him quite well.”
Super Chow, who won the 2024 Toboggan (G3) at Aqueduct by 4 ¼ lengths in front-running style before coming right back to win the six-furlong Tom Fool at the Big A, won the Gulfstream Park Sprint during the 2024-2025 Championship Meet under Ruiz, who also guided the Kentucky-bred speedster to a 2022 Pimlico allowance win the only other time he has ridden the Delgado trainee.
White Abarrio’s trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. entered the multiple Grade 1 stakes winner in the Mr. Prospector with the intent to use it as a prep for the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) Jan. 24 at Gulfstream. However. he has been on the fence about whether to bypass Saturday’s sprint and go directly to the Pegasus, which White Abarrio won last year after checking in second in the Mr. Prospector.
Should White Abarrio not run in the Mr. Prospector, Godolphin’s Knightsbridge is likely to be heavily favored. Rated second at 7-5 on a morning line with White Abarrio, the Bill Mott-trainee will seek to win his first stakes race from two tries during his five-race career. Prior to finishing third in the 2024 Perryville (G3) at Keeneland, the 4-year-old son of Nyquist won by 10 ¾ lengths on debut at Churchill Downs before winning by nine lengths in a Gulfstream allowance in his second start during the 2023-2034 Championship Meet.
Knightsbridge has run only twice this year, finishing second at Gulfstream in a second-level optional claiming allowance Feb. 15 before coming off a nine-month layoff to win a Nov. 15 seven-furlong optional claiming allowance at Aqueduct by 2 ¾ lengths under Junior Alvarado, who has the return mount Saturday.
Chiefswood Stables Limited’s Playmea Tune, rated third at 8-1 on the morning line, enters the Mr. Prospector off a seven-furlong optional claiming allowance victory over Woodbine’s synthetic surface Nov. 15. The Jose Carroll-trained veteran stakes performer finished fifth in last year’s Mr. Prospector in his only dirt start in his 12 race career.
Hall of Famer John Velazquez has the call on the 5-year-old Maclean’s Music gelding.
David Bernsen LLC, Mia Familiar Racing Stable and Corey Russo’s Wound Up, a 10-race winner on the West Coast, is slated to make his first start for trainer Jose D’Angelo in the Mr. Prospector. Rated at 12-1, the 5-year-old son of Mendelsohn will be ridden by Edgard Zayas.
Holly Crest Farm’s Great Navigator, a New Jersey-bred stakes winner last time out; Gray V Train Racing LLC’s Hold My Bourbon, the pacesetter in the Harlan’s Holiday last Saturday; and Sherry Racing’s Lethal Speed round out the field.
