Tappan Street, Disco Time Work for Pegasus

Sunday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Estimated at $400,000
10YOs Fly the W, Xy Speed Make Season Debuts Sunday

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Florida Derby (G1) winner Tappan Street, who successfully returned from an eighth month layoff to win here Dec. 19, worked for the first time Saturday since his victory in preparation for the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Saturday, Jan. 24.

“It was a really good move, by himself, :49.2 and 1:02.2,” said trainer Brad Cox. “I thought the track was much deeper after the break up there [at Payson Park].”

Also preparing for the Pegasus World Cup for Cox on Friday was unbeaten stakes winner Disco Time, breezing five furlongs in 1:01.

“Disco Time went [Friday], lights out,” Cox said. “He’s really on it. Super pleased with how he’s breezed the last few weeks and how he physically looks.”

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is estimated to reach $400,000 for Sunday’s 10-race program at Gulfstream Park.

First race post time is 12:20 p.m.

The popular multi-race wager spans Races 5-10, starting with a maiden optional claimer for 3-year-old fillies sprinting six furlongs on the main track that drew a wide-open field of 11 led by second-time starter Jestina from leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. Seven other horses are making their race debut including Don’t Do It Lucy, a $110,000 son of Girvin trained by Jose D’Angelo.

Fly the W is set to make his 10-year-old debut in Race 6, a starter optional claimer for 4-year-olds and up going a mile and 70 yards on the all-weather Tapeta course. The gelded son of Hall of Famer Ghostzapper drew Post 1 in a field of nine as he chases a 23rd career win and 15th in 32 tries on the Tapeta.

Race 7 is a maiden special weight for 3-year-old fillies going one mile on the main track. Among the group of seven are Betty’s Pearl, a $700,000 daughter of Munnings second or third in three starts; $700,000 Gun Runner yearling Paradise, making her second start; and Song of Sarah, a first-time starter by Curlin trained by Danny Gargan.

Another veteran 10-year-old making his season debut is Xy Speed, a 16-time winner of more than $600,000, in the Race 8 feature, an optional claiming allowance scheduled for five furlongs on the grass. Xy Speed was beaten a head as the favorite in his most recent start Oct. 25. Among his rivals is fellow multiple stakes winner Eamonn.

Race 9 is an optional claiming allowance for older Florida-breds sprinting six furlongs where makes just his third lifetime start after returning from 17 months away with decisive maiden triumph at the course and distance Dec. 7. The field of eight includes three multiple winners – Vertrauen, Adios Now and Banded Rocket.

The Race 10 finale is a maiden special weight for 3-year-old fillies scheduled at a one-turn mile on the grass which attracted an overflow field of 16. Fraudster, a $400,000 daughter of Charlatan trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, is the lukewarm 4-1 program favorite. Other six-figure fillies in the main body of the race are Mohawk Moon, by Candy Ride, and Josie Joe, by Uncle Mo. The late champion is also represented by Irish-bred Preclude, also from the Pletcher barn.

In the Rainbow 6, the jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

The Rainbow 6 has gone unsolved for seven consecutive racing days since returning multiple mandatory payouts of $2,390.64 Dec. 21.

There will also be a Super Hi-5 carryover in Sunday’s 10th race of $9,694.74.

The 10th race, a maiden special weight event at a mile on turf for 3-year-old fillies, has a full field with a 4-1 favorite in Fraudster, trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by John Velazquez. The $400,000 son of Charlatan was second going six furlongs in November at Aqueduct. Pletcher will also saddle first-time starter Preclude. Brendan Walsh will saddle two first-time starters in Mohawk Moon and Surprise Ending while On Time Delivery makes her debut for Graham Motion.

Who’s hot: Jockey Jorge Ruiz notched back-to-back victories Saturday aboard McRavin ($15.20) in Race 8 and Hollen Drive ($15.60) in Race 9 … Jockey Mario Gutierrez doubled on Sweeping Shadow ($5) in Race 4 and Sister Troienne ($2.60) in the $175,000 Ginger Brew, as did Irad Ortiz Jr. on Neural Network ($4.40) in Race 5 and Commandment ($3) in the $175,000 Mucho Macho Man … Commandment and Doctrine ($50.20) in Race 1 are both trained by Brad Cox.
