Students Honored by FHBPA, Gulfstream Park

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – The eight recipients of the Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (FHBPA) scholarships were honored Sunday at Gulfstream Park.

A total of $18,000 was distributed to the students, who were celebrated during a luncheon in Ten Palms Restaurant and recognized in the winner’s circle after the fourth race.

The eight scholarship recipients were: Rene Agustin, Christopher Catanese, Ronald Coy, Lisell Coy, Marbella Martinez, Isabel Greysi Teruel, Mayeli Valenzuela Alvarez, and Joli Dulce Rosso. The students will be attending Broward College, Nova Southeastern University, Sheridan Technical College, University of South Florida, and Opportunity Training Careers.

To be eligible for the FHBPA scholarship students must be Florida licensed trainers and backstretch employees and their direct dependents. Scholarships may be used for undergraduate studies at any accredited college, university, community college or trade school.

Applications are accepted from May to early July each year.

Prado Wins No. 7100


Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado won his 7,100th career race Sunday when he rallied Uncaptured King up the rail to take the sixth race.

Trained by Henry Collazo, Uncaptured King covered the six furlongs in 1:11.41.

Prado, elected to the Hall of Fame in 2008, is ranked 8th all time in wins, 41 behind Chris McCarron.
