Smoken Boy Schools Sunday Ahead of Florida Derby (G1) Start
KEM Stables’ Puerto Rican Group 1 winner Smoken Boy schooled in Gulfstream Park’s paddock and walking ring during Sunday’s first race, less than a week before his next scheduled start in the $1 million Curlin Florida Derby (G1).
Trainer Cheryl Winebaugh’s husband and assistant, Ken, was delighted with the way the gray or roan son of Catholic Boy handled his surroundings.
“He’s bouncing around here. I like that,” Ken Winebaugh said. “I noticed he got a little nervous last time when I claimed him, so I wanted to settle him down just a little bit in the paddock. He settled down real nice.”
Smoken Boy won two of three races in Puerto Rico for previous owner Sonata Stable, including the 1 1/16-mile Clasico Agustin Mercado Reveron (G1) by 9 ¼ lengths Dec. 8 at Camarero. He ran eighth in his stateside debut, the Feb. 8 Sam F. Davis (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs, then finished sixth behind undefeated Grande in a 1 1/8-mile optional claiming allowance Feb. 27 at Gulfstream.
Claimed for $75,000 out of that race, Smoken Boy drew Post 3 of 10 in the Florida Derby and will be ridden by Edgar Perez.
“We’re going to school him a little bit and take him to the gate so he breaks a little bit better,” Ken Winebaugh said. “I know he’s been breaking a little lackadaisical. I want to see if I can get him to break a little sharper.”
Wednesday’s Rainbow 6 Estimated Pool $200,000
There were six live tickets going into Sunday’s last race to take down the Rainbow 6, but the 20-cent wager was not hit and will now have an estimated pool Wednesday of $200,000
The Rainbow 6 has been solved 10 times during the 2024-2025 Championship Meet, eight times in the new year and five of those mandatory payouts. It was most recently hit for a $121,198.50 payout March 21, and has a final mandatory payout scheduled for closing day Sunday, March 30.
